About Paint Roller, the daily painting puzzle

Paint Roller is a free daily puzzle about order. You start with a blank cream canvas and a small picture to copy. Each roll paints a whole row or column in the colour your roller is loaded with, covering whatever was underneath. Recreate the target picture in as few rolls as you can and try to match par.

Because every roll covers earlier ones, the answer is never just paint each cell. The same six-by-six picture can take many more rolls if you pick the wrong order, and that is where the fun is. Everyone gets the same picture each day, named like a little artwork, and a finished painting is hung in a gold frame when you solve it.

One strategy tip: work backwards. The last roll you make is always a complete row or column of one colour in the target. Spot one, imagine it painted last, then look for the next line that is a single colour once that line is set aside. Reading the picture back to front gives you the order: broad background lines go first, details go on top.

Paint Roller is made by a small two-person team. It is free to play, needs no account and sits next to Pondlight, a second two-minute puzzle that arrives every day at the same time.

Paint Roller FAQ

Is Paint Roller free?

Yes. Paint Roller is free to play, there is nothing to buy and you do not need to sign up.

When does the puzzle reset?

A new painting arrives at your local midnight, so the day changes at a different moment for people in different time zones. Puzzle numbers count days since 1 January 2026.

How is par worked out?

A solver searches for the shortest possible sequence of rolls that recreates the picture, so par is the true minimum for that day rather than a guess. Finish in par rolls for three stars, within two extra rolls for two stars, and anything more for one star.

Do I need an account?

No. There are no accounts. Your streak, stats and settings are saved in your own browser, so they stay on the device you play on.

Does it work offline?

Once the page has loaded, the whole game runs in your browser, so losing your connection mid-puzzle will not interrupt it. Fiddleday is not an installable offline app yet, so you need a connection to open the page in the first place.
